Papua mine clash toll rises

By foreign affairs editor Peter Cave

An Indonesian policeman wounded in clashes at the American-operated Freeport gold and copper mine in Papua last week has died in hospital, raising the death toll from the incident to six.

Three policemen and a military intelligence officer were beaten and stabbed to death during the riot and a civilian later died in hospital.

The first sergeant from Indonesia paramilitary Mobile Brigade, who is known as Brimob, was one of about 20 policemen seriously injured in the clash last week.

Police say 14 suspects will face trial over the murders and they are hunting for 24 others.

Security in the capital, Jayapura, has been increased in recent days with extra police on the streets and at key buildings, including the Governor's office and provincial parliament.
